Divinia's Blog - Websites for Small Businesses

Using a Blog to help change public opinion

An interesting article entitled “A Growing Dispute: Fertilizer Start-Up Uses Web as Defense” written by Gwendolyn Bounds appeared in the Wall Street Journal Online Edition this morning.

A small fertilizer company named TerraCycle is being sued by Scott’s (MiracleGro) over packaging/brand conflicts and for claims TerraCycle has made about their products.

TerraCycle created a blog called suedbyscotts.com to rally public and media support against Scott’s. It remains to be seen how effective this blog will be against fighting this lawsuit, however it is worthwhile to appreciate the potential a blog has to spread your company’s message in times of crisis.

Google AdWords Billing

Often times, Clients that use Google AdWords are billed multiple times in the same month. This unpredicatable billing prompted us to research exactly how Google AdWords handles billing:

The answer is in Google AdWords Help Center.

“Google bills you after 30 days, or when your reach your account credit limit, whichever comes first.”

Divinia, in conjunction with a few other partners/investors, will be launching a new birth announcement website called BabyBlurt.

Here is how it works, from babyblurt.com:

“Before the baby’s arrival, Sign Up, Login, then enter the names, email addresses and telephone numbers of your friends and loved ones. When the baby arrives, you call a single number and record your message. Then, BabyBlurt delivers your messages via telephone and email.”

Wall Street Journal’s Podcasts on Small Business Websites

Here are 3 good points made in this podcast:

  • direct your customer’s to their interests
  • 40% of small businesses don’t have websites due to hassle and cost
  • more video and interactive features are showing up on small business websites

The podcast mentions using Content Management Software and eCommerce Merchant Solutions to save money and avoid the expensive programming needed
to build websites from scratch. We agree with the approach whole heartedly and it is a foundation of the services we offer. A few years
ago it made more sense to architect websites on a client by client basis, with today’s (open source/free) tools this is no longer the case. We
prefer to focus on design and leverage existing tools to keep costs low, technology consistent, and delivery time rapid.

  • Permission Marketing

One of the products we love is MailBuild. It allows us to design templates for eNewsletter Campaigns and let Clients control all of the content, subscribers, and timing of their eNewsletters. A company called Freshview built MailBuild and has a great blog post about Permission Marketing. Read Permissions Guidelines Handout

    Getting Documents signed

We have had success using EchoSign, a service that lets you upload a document and send it to multiple email addresses. Once received via email, the recipient follows a link to view the document, then clicks on a button to “sign” and enters their initials.

This has worked great for getting our general “Services Agreement” signed by Clients. Like other similar apps, you can view a history of when recipients viewed the document, signed it, etc.
